Why is this not an NCTJ course?

We choose to teach a different syllabus as we feel that what we teach is more relevant to the needs of our students. The major differences come in the areas of local and central government (where we place less emphasis than the NCTJ) and QuarkXpress, Subediting and Freelance journalism (where we place more emphasis).

We do not teach shorthand as a classroom subject - those of our students who wish to learn shorthand are recommended to take evening classes during the period of the course. Certain areas of the press (mainly local and regional papers) still look for shorthand - so if this is an area of interest to you, you should consider this as an option.

This is a practical course - you will be writing your first news pieces within 48 hours of starting - which covers the major aspects of journalism and will give an excellent grounding whichever branch of journalism you then wish to enter. Recognised by the National Union of Journalists, the course has an excellent track record in creating employable graduates.
