Distance Learning Courses[Print a Copy]

Distance learning is the ideal solution for anyone wanting to train as a news journalist, features writer, freelance writer or creative writer without having to juggle an existing career or other commitments. Simply by studying at home and corresponding regularly with your tutor you can set yourself on the path to knowledge and success - all while working at your own pace.

Poetry

The course covers all forms of poetry, from the traditional rhyming couplet to the most minimalist of free verse. You will be taught where to look for inspiration (if this is lacking), how to avoid cliché and how to convey the intensity of your emotions to the reader in the simplest way; how to achieve good rhythm and metre, and how to make the most of your natural abilities. In no way will you be forced to write in a style which is unnatural to you, but every effort will be made to acquaint you with different techniques and to enhance and improve your writing to a point where both you and your tutor are satisfied.

Finally, if the standard of your work is considered good enough, your tutor will give you some practical advice on possible markets for your poems, what to aim for and what to avoid. Above all, remember that poetry is a highly subjective medium, and a poem can be both precious and private. For many people the knowledge that they are producing poems to the best of their ability – perhaps to be read by one person alone – is reward enough, without the lure of prizes and publication.
